"Music editing"

Music editing is the direct work with notes on the one hand and the customization of e.g. the arrangements, instrumentation, rhythm or the harmonic on the other.
Nowadays, modern computer software makes music editing a lot easier. When editing music, the copyright of the original composer has to be ensured. An edit can also be registered as protected artistic work with a collecting society (in Germany GEMA) if the edit shows an independent artistic input. Therefore legal questions have to be clarified. This first and foremost requires the approval of the original copyright holder.
Then again, editing is nowadays often also referred to the technical sound processing of a recording (optimizing the frequencies, eliminating white noise and crackling, and mastering).
